Achilles Tendinitis

OVERVIEW

Our surgeons are globally recognised and experienced in reafoot and ankle reconstruction.

Achilles tendinitis is a painful condition more common in adult males which involves chronic inflammation of the Achilles tendon (connecting the calf musculature to the heel). In longstanding neglected Achilles tendinitis, rupture of the tendon can occur.

Symptoms (can vary)

  • Pain along the course of the Achilles tendon.
  • Inability to tolerate running or standing on one’s ‘tip-toes’.
  • Diminished ankle joint range of motion.
  • Sometimes a ‘knot’ can be felt along the course of the tendon.

Treatment

  • Often times symptoms can be controlled RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) in combination with an anti-inflammatory. However, when this fails to provide noticeable lasting relief other therapies, both surgical and non-surgical, can be indicated.
  • The primary goal of Achilles tendon therapy is to resolve the chronic inflammation within the tendon.
  • Often times even a ruptured tendon can be treated non-surgically with casted non-weight bearing. There are indications for surgical repair of the tendon in more extreme injuries.
  • The best treatment for one person is not necessarily the best for another. There are many variables we will consider when selecting the right management for you.
